Soldiers Discover Marijuana Farm Largest in Mexico

San Quintin - Mexican soldiers found a marijuana plantation largest ever found in the country, in a desert surrounded by cactus.

"Soldiers patrolling the area found the 120 hectares of marijuana fields that are maintained by dozens of men," said Gen. Alfonso Duarte on Thursday (14 / 7).

According to Duarte, plantations are found in the state of Baja California is located about 200 miles or 320 kilometers south of San Diego. If the harvest, the marijuana garden was producing about 120 tons of marijuana worth about U.S. $ 160 million. "This is the largest marijuana plantations we've found in this country. And this plant will be destroyed," said Duarte.

Most people who take care of the plants managed to escape from arrest, but the six suspects were captured at an army checkpoint. The men were digging a well in a barren place and pumping the water through a hose to irrigate these tamaman. The trees of marijuana has reached a height of 2.5 meters.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has deployed tens of thousands of troops into the streets to confront the drug traffickers, shortly after he took power in late 2006.

Since then, violence increased in Mexico with more than 40,000 deaths. These conditions undermine support for the conservative National Action Party leader Calderon. The party faces an uphill battle to secure re-election of Calderon in July.

Mexico is America's main supplier of marijuana, and most of the cocaine consumed in the U.S. comes from Mexico.
